"Top Three Tax Tips for 2015 Tax Season" with Tax Attorney Heather Gosnick, Lead Tax Attorney, Leverage Tax Services
Here are highlights from Heather Gosnick's presentation:
Tip 1: Hire a tax professional to prepare your return. Consult the IRS website for professionals with credentials.
Here is the link to the IRS directory of tax professionals: http://irs.treasury.gov/rpo/rpo.jsf
Tip 2: Beware - This Year's Scams.
IRS does not threaten to take your house in 10 days.
IRS revenue agents do not knock on your door.
IRS revenue agents do not call you on the phone and collect taxes over the telephone.
The most common amount scammers ask for seems to be about $4,000.00.
Scammers have even copied the IRS's 'hold' music.
Don't stay on the phone with an "IRS agent" who telephones you.
Hang up and call the IRS at (800) 829-1040.
The IRS RARELY calls taxpayers. When they do, it's after repeated notices sent by mail. If you have not received at least a few notices from IRS by mail, the call you receive is a fraud - hang up.
Tip 3: The most common - and confusing - legitimate forms you are likely to receive in the mail from the IRS and what they mean.
"Notice of Deficiency"
"Notice of failure to file return"
"Balance Due Notice"
